Dad Hat, Trucker or Snapback? A Plain Guide to Hat Types
Decorators United
What actually separates a dad hat from a trucker, a snapback or a fitted cap, and which one suits your head, your logo and your budget.
Dad hat, trucker, snapback. These names get used a lot, and they do not always mean what people think they mean. Here is a plain guide from a shop that sews custom hats in Spokane every week, so you can pick the right hat before you pick the decoration.
The big split: structured or unstructured
Most of the differences between hat types come down to the crown. A hat is either structured, with a stiff front that stands up on its own, or unstructured, with a soft crown that relaxes into the shape of your head.
Structured hats hold their shape and keep the front panel flat. That makes them a steady surface for a patch or a large logo.
Unstructured hats sit lower and softer. They have a laid-back look and are popular for staff hats and shelf merch.
The common styles
Dad hat is an unstructured, low-profile cap with a curved brim and usually an adjustable strap in the back.
Trucker hat has a foam front and a mesh back. The firm front panel is a natural place for a patch.
Snapback is a structured cap with a snap closure in the back, so one hat fits a whole group.
Beanies, bucket hats and visors are their own category. I cover each of them in my hat style guides.
Closures: snap, strap or fitted
Snap closure is easy to adjust and good for group orders where you do not know every head size.
Strap closure sits softer and lower, and it is common on dad hats.
Fitted has no adjustment at all, so it looks clean, but you need to order sizes.
Match the hat to the decoration
A hat style changes how a patch or embroidery looks. A flat, structured front panel keeps a large patch crisp. A soft, unstructured crown can slump under a large, stiff patch, so go smaller or pick a structured hat if the design is big. If you are not sure, tell me the logo and the audience, and I will suggest a hat.
