What is a unstructured hat?
Unstructured caps are usually made from washed cotton twill or chino with a low profile and a pre-curved visor. Without buckram, the front folds down when the hat is off the head.

Best decorations for unstructured hats
- Flat embroidery. Thread moves with the fabric, so it looks natural on a soft crown.
- Small leatherette patches. Keep them modest, around 2.5 to 3 inches wide, so the crown can still flex.
- Woven labels and loop labels. A small label on the side or front adds a subtle, premium detail.

Unstructured hats: common questions
What is the difference between a dad hat and a trucker hat?
A dad hat is unstructured, usually all cotton, with a low crown and a fabric strap. A trucker hat is usually structured with a foam or cotton front and a mesh back, plus a snapback closure.
Can you put a patch on an unstructured hat?
Yes, but keep it small and choose a flexible patch such as leatherette, woven or embroidered. Large rigid patches fight the soft crown.
Does 3D puff embroidery work on a dad hat?
It can, but puff looks best on a structured front. On an unstructured hat flat embroidery is the safer choice.
